Holocaust survivor Joseph Schor, 90 years of age, of Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of West Hartford, Conn., passed away on Shabbat Yitro – Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018. Born in Zalosci, Poland, he was interned in the Zborow Ghetto and was the sole survivor of his family – father Nathan Dubowy, mother Pesha Dubowy (nee Apter), sister Shaindel, brothers Eli, Mendel, Jacob, Moishe. After liberation by the Soviet Army, he met his much beloved wife, the late Genia (Tannenbaum) Schor of Zelechow, Poland, who was also a sole survivor of her family – father Moishe, mother Rachael, and twins Samuel and Toube. Together, Joseph and Genia represented the rare remnant of what remained of the once vibrant community of three million pre-war Polish Jews – only one percent survived the ravages that the Nazis and their henchmen perpetrated. (And not just on Jews, gentiles suffered as well, with Poland losing 20 percent of its entire population, more than any other occupied country.) Their first child – Nathan (San Francisco, Calif.) was born in Poland in 1948, one of the first Jews born after the Holocaust. Mark (now a doctor in Wellington, Fla.) was born in 1955 in a Displaced Persons camp in Austria; and, Roberta Walpert (born in USA), an attorney in Upper Saddle River, N.J. With the assistance of his uncle Benjamin Apter, who left Poland in 1925, and his wife Fanny, Joseph emigrated to the USA in 1955. Soon thereafter with two other Holocaust survivors – Benjamin Grossman and Kurt Israel – he started Hartford Kosher Caterers (DBA Imperial Caterers). Taking advantage of the opportunities America offered, the business prospered, even serving President Jerry Ford. Joseph is also survived by his son-in-law Kenneth Walpert and his parents, Harvey and Ann Walpert, all of whom he greatly admired; and much beloved grandsons, Dr. Adam Walpert and his wife Dr. Kady Goldlist; law school student Jacob Walpert and high-schooler, Benjamin Schor. And also by the grandchildren of Ben and Fanny Apter: Clifford Apter, George Apter, Michael Apter, Cindy Tabachnik (nee Apter), Paula Rudderman (nee Apter), and Brad Rudderman. Another grandson, Steven Apter, professor of psychology at Syracuse University, died of cancer. Funeral services were held on Feb. 6 in Hartford, with Rabbi Phillip Lazowski officiating. Interment is in the Aaron Association Cemetery in Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford. For further information or to sign the guest book for Joseph, please visit  www.weinsteinmortuary.com/funerals.cfm.
