He was also predeceased by his grandson Jeremy Saxe, his son-in-law Gregory Johnson, his brother George, and his sister Sophie. He is survived by his children, Jill Noel (John) of Hamden, Heidi Saxe (Tracy) of Orange, and Michael Sokoloff (Judy) of Cheshire; his grandchildren, Dayna, Jessica, Robert, Ryan, Brian, and Thomas.

He served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier on a B-17 during World War II. Herman Shemonsky, 89, formerly of Simsbury and Old Saybrook, died Nov. 17. He was the widower of Muriel P. Shemonsky. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as an MP. He was a founding member of the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation in Simsbury. He is survived by his son and son-in-law, Peter Shemonsky and Clement Mok of San Francisco, Calif.; his nephews, Barry Vine of Woodbridge and Bobby Shea of Windsor Locks; his nieces, Sue Cervasio and Grace Zeloznot of Pennsylvania; several cousins; and his friend Deborah Caswell of Berlin.

Joseph Samuel Rachlin, 85, of West Hartford, died Nov. 13. He was the husband of Rosalind (Roz Friedman) Rachlin. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Rose (Saxe) and Irving I. Rachlin. He was a member of Beth El Temple in West Hartford. He was commissioned an ROTC 2nd Lieutenant Officer and promoted to First Lieutenant in Korea, where he served from 1955 to 1957. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, David Rachlin, Aaron Rachlin and Rebecca Berman and her husband James; his grandchildren, Zachary Rachlin, Elijah Rachlin, Sarah Berman and Jessica Berman; his sister Paula Rachlin Gottesman; and several nieces and cousins. He was also predeceased by his brother Dr. William Rachlin.

Florence Post, 81, of West Hartford, died Nov. 13. She was the wife of Philip Post. Born in Kovno, Lithuania, she was the daughter of Irving and Dr. Lea Newman. A Holocaust survivor, as a child she was imprisoned with her mother and siblings in the Kovno ghetto until 1944, when her mother escaped with her from the ghetto. She was then hidden by a Lithuanian couple on their farm until the end of the war. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Michael Post of Big Bear Lake, Calif., Allison Ghamo and her husband Joe of West Hartford, and Aron Post and his wife Jessica of Needham, Mass.; her brother William Newman and his wife Joan of West Hartford; her sister-in-law Emily Honigberg of Athens, Ga.; her grandchildren, Max, Joey, Sam and Lana Ghamo, Shelby Post, Teddy and Olivia Post; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Lana Newman.

Dr. Joseph “Joe” Weiss, 70, beloved husband to Arlene, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 17, 2017 in New York City, with his wife and three children by his side. Joe was born in New York City and resided in West Hartford, Conn. with his family for more than four decades. Joe graduated from Brooklyn College, where he met his best friend and soulmate Arlene. He later received his medical degree from St. Louis University. Joe practiced dermatology in both New Britain and Southington for over 40 years; he was dedicated to helping people and worked up until the day of his diagnosis with glioblastoma. Joe was an incredibly active person and had a zest for living his life in the outdoors. Hiking, windsurfing, running, golfing, and gardening were several of the activities he enjoyed most. Joe had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, travel, and dreaming big. His most beloved activity was spending time with his family. He leaves his daughter and son-in-law Allyson and Jared Horowitz, daughter and son-in-law Marissa and Adam Forsted, and son and daughter-in-law Richard and Meg Weiss. Joe was an exceptionally devoted parent as well as a wonderful grandfather to Jolie and Jake Horowitz and Ian and Isaac Forsted.
